Allergy Shots

Allergy shots also known as, immunotherapy, are administered to increase your body’s tolerance to the allergens which cause allergic reactions. They shots are recommended for people who often suffer from allergic reactions or who suffer from an allergic reaction for more than three months in a year. The treatment contains a series of injections which contains a small amount of a particular substance to which the individual has sensitivity. The allergy shots are not capable of curing allergies but they increase your fighting ability against the allergens. After a course immunotherapy it is found that 80 to 90 percent of people find some bit of relief from their symptoms and in some case people witness almost complete disappearance of the allergic reactions.

The success and effectiveness of allergy shots depend on the extent of severity of the suffering individual and also on the number of substances to which that person is allergic. Till now it has been observed that allergy shots have been successful in cases of insect venom allergies, pollen allergy, and dust allergy and also for allergic asthma. They are also successful in cases of mold and pet allergies .But they are not so successful in cases of food allergies and hives.

The allergy shots are generally administered in your right upper arm and are given regularly with increasing doses until the course is over. In order to get rid of the allergy symptoms to some extent you may need to go for the shots every 3 to 4 weeks for 2 to 5 years. If the shots are successful you will get great deal of relief from the problems.

However before taking the allergy shots you need to be careful with some aspects. For example do not do any physical exercise for two hours before the shots. It can be harmful for you. Also be frank with your consulting doctors regarding the medications that you are taking currently. Otherwise you may experience some anti reactions.

Moreover, after taking the allergy shots you will be monitored for about an hour to see if you any symptoms of negative reaction. If symptoms like difficulty in breathing and wheezing appears after taking the allergy shots it should be immediately informed to the doctor.
