Corn Allergy Symptoms




Corn allergy symptoms develop in a person when his body’s immune system mistakenly thinks that a harmless product like corn is harmful for the body and releases antibodies to fight the corn protein. This results in a number of discomforts and complicacies for the patient.

Corn allergy affects a large number of people. The symptoms can appear in children as well as in adults. Corn allergy symptoms can differ from person to person. The symptoms can be mild in some people as well as very severe in some other individuals. The intensity of the symptoms depends on a number of factors like the ability of the sensitive individual to fight the allergen, the amount of corn ingested and also the time when the corn based food is eaten. Those with very severe sensitivity to corn protein may develop the symptoms by consuming even a very small quantity of corn. In some are cases of corn allergy some individuals with very severe sensitivity to corn can develop a life threatening condition called Anaphylaxis also.

Corn allergy symptoms are triggered by corn protein and not by corn oil. In most cases the corn allergy symptoms may appear in the form of a number of diseases like:

  • Migraine headache
  • Rashes and redness in different parts of the skin
  • Itchy skin ,nose and eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Watery eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Tingling in the mouth
  • Swelling of tongue, lips , and mouth
  • Allergic shiners
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramp and bloating
  • Gas
  • Nausea
  • Wheezing
  • Allergic asthma
  • Stuffy ear

A person suffering from corn allergy may suffer from one or two of these symptoms. However, in some worst cases they can be affected by a majority of these symptoms, making him miserable.

In some cases it is also seen that besides the above listed symptoms, a person may experience some additional symptoms like:

  • Urinary track infection
  • Fever
  • Fatigue and feeling of weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Attention deficiency and hyperactivity in children
  • Irritability some other psychological problems
  • Constant mood swing and depression
  • Muscle pain and arthritis

Anaphylaxis

In some individuals with extreme corn sensitivity a condition called Anaphylaxis may develop. Anaphylaxis is a very rare but also a very dangerous condition and needs emergency medical attention. Anaphylaxis can attack very suddenly and involves a large number of bodily functions including the cardiovascular function also.

The symptoms of Anaphylaxis may include:

  • Swelling of mouth ,tongue and the airways to the lungs resulting in the patient’s inability to take breath
  • Tightness in the chest accompanied by pain
  • Feeling of numbness in limbs
  • Sudden drop in the body’s blood pressure level
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness

Anaphylaxis can occur any time and can affect both children as well as adults. If this condition is not treated at the right time it can become fatal also
