Both children as well as adults may suffer from gluten allergy. But children suffer more than adults from this disease. Gluten allergy symptoms can surface at any time and can affect a large number of bodily functions and they vary from person to person .Moreover, the severity and rapidity of gluten allergy attacks also significantly differ from individual to individual .In some instances the symptoms appear just after the consumption of a particular food that triggers allergic reaction; while in some other cases the symptoms may need some time to surface.

The one thing that is common in all those people who suffer from gluten allergy is their inability to digest products containing wheat. Symptoms of gluten allergy may appear in various forms and are capable of disrupting several normal functions of human body. If left untreated for a long time, gluten allergy can cause permanent damage to the patient. This kind of allergy may cause skin as well as dental problems. But the place where it very frequently attacks is the intestine. It disrupts the functions of the intestine resulting in a number of diseases and causing great amount of distress and discomfort to the patient .The gluten allergy symptoms may appear in the form of a number of diseases which include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Anaemia
  • Allergic Rhinitis
  • Muscle cramps
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Hives
  • Foul smelling stools
  • Depression
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Irritability and other behavioural problems
  • Swelling around the mouth

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

These are the most frequent and common symptoms associated with gluten allergy. It should be kept in mind that a person suffering from gluten allergy may suffer from either one or some of the problems mentioned above.Again, in some individual cases the symptoms can contradict one another. For example, a person may experience diarrhoea and constipation alternatively creating lot of confusion and distress in the mind of the sufferer.

Children suffering from gluten allergy for a long time may suffer from abnormal weight loss which can hamper their growth .Rapid occurrence of Gluten allergy symptoms, moreover, may lead to some behavioural problems in children which may affect them in the long run. It can also result in delayed puberty, attention problem and extended abdomen in children .Some studies even suggest that gluten allergy may lead to Autism also.
