Penicillin allergy symptoms occur when your immune system reacts in a negative sense to the penicillin antibiotics. Children as well as adults can suffer from this allergy. The symptoms can be mild, moderate and even severe and life threatening depending upon the level of your sensitivity to the allergen.

Penicillin allergy symptoms usually occur within an hour of ingesting the antibiotics. In most cases it is seen that the symptoms generally come in the form of skin reactions. The most frequent and common symptoms of penicillin allergy are

• Redness and rashes in different parts of the skin
• Hives
• Itchy and watery eyes
• Running nose
• Swollen lips y, tongue, and throat
• Wheezing

In most cases penicillin allergy symptoms do not remain for a long time and do not cause any serious damage to the allergy patient. The patient may suffer from some of these symptoms and not all. Only in some are cases that a patient may experience all of these symptoms together.

Sometimes penicillin allergy symptoms may lead to Anaphylaxis in some extremely sensitive individuals. Though Anaphylaxis is rare to found yet when it attacks the situation becomes very dangerous for the patient. It is a life threatening situation and a doctor’s help should be sought as soon as possible. Anaphylaxis may attack a person within an hour of his contact with penicillin.

Anaphylaxis blocks the airways to the lungs resulting in the patient’s inability to breathe. This is accompanied by a sudden drop in blood pressure level, a feeling of numbness in limbs and rapid and irregular heartbeat. The patient may also experience, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea along with dizziness. In some worst cases the skin turns blue and ultimately the patient looses consciousness.
