Soy Allergy Symptoms




Soy allergy symptoms are more prominent in infants and children than in adults, although adults are also developing this allergy. Soy allergy occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly believes soy protein to be harmful for the body, and, as such, releases histamines. This histamine can cause number irregularities in the body’s gastrointestinal system, respiratory system, the skin and the cardiovascular system, causing a number of diseases.

In majority of cases the symptoms of soy allergy are mild. They can be discomforting but not serious or life threatening. But in a few rare cases soy can trigger Anaphylaxis in some people. The intensity and severity of soy allergy symptoms depend on the affected person’s ability to fight the allergen and also on the quantity of soy based food that was eaten.

(1) Gastrointestinal problems : Soy protein can cause a number of gastrointestinal problems in those individuals who are sensitive to soy. The most common intestinal problems associated with soy are:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain and bloating
  • Gas
  • Nausea

(2) Respiratory problems: Soy protein can trigger some respiratory problems in some individuals. The most frequent respiratory problems found in patients of soy allergy are:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy nose
  • Nasal congestion and post nasal drip
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Allergic Asthma
  • Runny nose

(3) Skin problems: Soy allergy symptoms may come in the form of a number of skin related problems. The most common dermatological problems associated with soy allergy are:

  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Itching and redness in different parts of the body
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Swelling of lips and mouth
  • Allergic Shiners
  • Tingling in the mouth

Apart from these symptoms, a person with soy allergy may also experience some other symptoms like:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue and feeling of weakness
  • Hypertension
  • Irritability

Anaphylaxis

In some people who are very sensitive to soy, a condition called Anaphylaxis can occur. Anaphylaxis is a very rare but also a very dangerous disease. It is life threatening and demands emergency medical attention. Anaphylaxis can attack very suddenly and can damage a large number of bodily functions.

The symptoms of Anaphylaxis include:

  • Swelling of mouth, tongue and the airways to the lungs resulting in the patients inability to breathe
  • Hoarse voice
  • Wheezing
  • Sudden drop in blood pressure level
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling of numbness in various limbs
  • Loss of consciousness

It is generally seen that in majority of children Soy allergy symptoms usually vanishes as they grow up. Those with peanut sensitivity and asthma are more at risk of developing complications from soy allergy.
